Training & Qualifications
I am a counselor who specializes in, among other things, the prevention and intervention in suicide.
I have three graduate degrees related to mental health (M.S. - Counseling Psychology, M.Ed. - School Counseling, M.P.H. - Social & Behavioral Sciences).
I have also completed a variety of prevention / intervention trianings including: QPR, Act on FACTS, SafeTalk, Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA), Psychological First Aid (PFA), Psychological First Aid for Schools (PFA-S), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM).
In addition, I have designed and delivered my own gatekeeper training model (Learning How to ACT) for at-risk teens which teaches them how to identify who may be at risk of suicide and how to safely intervene when they're concerned about the welfare of another person. In field tests over three years in an at-risk secondary population, the training program I developed demonstrated a substantial and statistically-significant improvement in awareness of suicide risk factors and warning signs, and improved competence in the capacity of youth to safely and effectively intervene in the presence of suicidal ideation.
